Ecotones crew member clearing fuels in oak woodland for defensible space

Defensible Space

We plan and clear fire-wise zones around homes and outbuildings — sized to your terrain and matched to local requirements, so a fire has less to carry when it arrives.
  • Brush clearance & ladder-fuel removal
  • Zone-by-zone defensible-space planning
  • Ongoing maintenance to keep zones clear
Restored habitat pond with mulched banks and native plantings

Ponds & Water Features

We design and build ponds and water features that hold water on the land — sited for the watershed and planted with native sedges and rushes, so wildlife has somewhere to return to.
  • Pond design & construction
  • Native bank and margin planting
  • Habitat sited for the whole watershed
Flame-cap kiln producing biochar on site above a Northern California valley

Biochar

We turn brush and slash into biochar on site with flame-cap kilns — reducing fuels on the land while producing a carbon-rich soil amendment that locks carbon into the ground.
  • On-site production from forest biomass
  • Soil amendment that improves water retention
  • Fuels reduced without hauling material off-site
Bilingual Ecotones training session taught in English and Spanish

Bilingual Trainings

We lead hands-on workshops in English and Spanish for crews, landowners, and partner organizations — taught in the field and the classroom, where the work actually happens.
  • English & Spanish instruction
  • Biochar, fire, defensible space & restoration
  • For crews, landowners & partner organizations
Restored Canticle Creek riparian corridor

Process-Based Restoration

We restore streams and watersheds by working with natural processes rather than against them — stabilizing banks, planting riparian natives, and using low-tech structures so water, sediment, and plants can rebuild habitat over time.
  • Bank stabilization & riparian planting
  • Low-tech, process-based structures
  • Follow-up visits to verify the work took
